Beijing Correspondent Malcolm Moore reports from China's National People's Congress where Xi Jinping has been formally elected the country's leader. To loud applause, Mr Xi, 59, stood up and bowed to the delegates before shaking hands with outgoing leader Hu Jintao and walking off stage in the Great Hall of the People. Only one of the delegates to the National People's Congress (NPC) declined to rubber-stamp Mr Xi's nomination, voting against him. There were three abstentions and 2,952 votes in favour. Mr Xi was elected by exactly the same margin to the chairmanship of the Central Military Commission, the body that controls the People's Liberation Army, completing the trinity of state, Communist Party and military leadership. "They needed at least one vote of dissent to show that it was a democratic process," commented Malcolm Moore, the Telegraph's Beijing Correspondent. He also reported that the result drew many comparisons on China's social media with the election of a new pope in Rome on Wednesday evening. "We were hoping for a puff of red smoke from the Great Hall today, to mimic the Vatican, but sadly not," he remarked. Martin and Jane Weekes recount the harrowing day that their two-year-old triplets Lillie, Jackson and Willsher died in a mall fire in Qatar, and reveal they are still awaiting official explanation. Lillie, Willsher and Jackson were trapped inside the nursery as a fire broke out below in Qatar's upmarket, Venice-themed Villaggio Mall on May 28 last year. The triplets, along with ten other children and their four carers, could not escape because an emergency exit was blocked from the outside. None survived. The tragic fire, which also left two firefighters dead, left unfathomable scars among the families of the victims, expatriates from 11 countries including the United States, France, Spain, South Africa and China. Immediately after the fire, an official investigation concluded -- according to a summary -- that the nursery was "unsafe" and that government authorities failed to ensure basic safety at the mall and "other buildings in Qatar". Despite repeated requests by the families and by numerous foreign governments, the Qatari government has never released the report; Mr and Mrs Weekes say they were personally promised its released by the then Crown Prince, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, now the nation's ruler. As smoke rises above Gaza after Israeli airstrikes that killed the Hamas military chief, a Hamas official warns that there will be revenge for the assassination. Hamas has said that Israeli air strike in Gaza which killed Ahmed Jabari, the head of its military wing, "has opened the gates of hell". Jabari, who is the most senior Hamas official to be killed since an Israeli invasion of Gaza four years ago, was killed in an air strike on a vehicle, in a dramatic resumption of Israel's policy of assassinating Palestinian militant leaders. He has long topped Israel's most-wanted list, the Associated Press reported, and was blamed for in a string of attacks, including the kidnapping of Israeli soldier Gilad Schalit in 2006. Jabari's son was also reportedly killed in the targeted airstrike, according to Osama Hamdan, a Hamas representative in Lebanon, talking to Al Jazeera in Doha. Fresh from competing against the world's best athletes this summer, South Africa's "Bladerunner" Oscar Pistorius took on a new challenge on Wednesday. The double amputee raced against a horse in the Qatari capital Doha - and won. He got off to a good start and, in a downhill finish, crossed the line with more than a second to spare. The unusual race was part of an effort to promote disability sport and fight discrimination in the region. "It wasn't about who won today, it was just about coming out here and really just showing people that those with disabilities are not to be stereotyped against," Pistorius said. "Having the Arab horse out here, which is a symbolisation of strength and power in this region, to be able to do a showcase event like this, is a lot of fun." Pistorius made history in London earlier this year when he became the first double amputee to compete at the Olympic Games, before claiming two gold medals at the Paralympics. The 26 year-old sprinter was in Doha for the 'Definitely Able' campaign which uses special events to highlight the exceptional feats Paralympic athletes are capable of. Several noted athletes have pitted themselves against animal opponents with limited success over the years. Welsh sprinter Jamie Baulch and American legend Jesse Owens have both raced against horses, while Pistorius' compatriot, rugby player Bryan Habana, once ran against a cheetah - and was roundly beaten.
